Extra! Extra! A Home Run For the
Adventure Club
The Adventure Club will
offer an exciting new schedule of events in 2008, thanks to a
generous grant from the Santa Barbara Foundation and the hard work
of the Adventure Club Committee, chaired by Vicki Wedmore!
As you may know, Adventure
Club strives to provide more opportunities for women and girls to be
physically active. In the past we’ve solely offered one time
clinics in any given activity. While we will continue offering
these 1 time clinics, we’re also expanding our programming by
offering 6-week follow-up clinics in some sports. Our first such
offering will be in January - basketball. Participants may sign up
for the one day clinic to see if they like playing basketball, the 6
week clinic to improve their skills and meet other like-minded
women, or both clinics.
We’re also expanding our
outreach efforts by striving to (1) set up social networks between
event participants (who will hopefully then go on to continue the
activity - click
here for a
prior success story titled Grassroots Basketball), and (2) team up
with local organizations that regularly offer the activity to assist
participants in continuing the activity.
Our tentative calendar of
events is as follows:
- January – basketball
- February – yoga or
pilates
- March – squash
- April – belly dancing
- April – golf
- May – surfing
- June – volleyball
- July – kickball
- August – water sports
- September – outrigger
canoe
- October – urban
hiking
- October – circuit
training
- November – fencing

If you are interested in
participating in any of these clinics, or know someone who is,
please contact us at
adventureclub@bodyelectric-sb.org as soon as possible.
Expressing interest early will help us plan for space and
instructors, and ensure you are contacted once the clinic is set.
We look forward to seeing
you at an Adventure Club clinic during 2008!
Body Electric is once
again donating inspirational stories about girls and women in sports
to the south county junior high and high schools.
This year’s junior high selection
is an anthology called “Girls Got Game”. “Girls Got Game: Sports
Stories and Poems” (160 pages) was edited by Sue Macy and suitable
for Middle School or Junior High readers.
“This is a book of short stories
and poems about a variety of different girls’ sports. Some of the
problems and solutions in the stories made me realize things about
my own sports experiences. In the story ‘Batting After Sophie’,
Becky feels she’s always in the shadow of another player. During the
game, instead of bunting like the coach says, she decides to hit
away … but the fielder catches the ball, and Becky isn’t the big
hero she thought she’d be – she’s out! It reminds you that it’s not
just about you - it’s a team sport. There are also poems like
‘Basketball’ that paint a picture in your head of how it really
feels to be in the game. This is a great book.”
– reviewed by Coco Crowfoot,
Junior, Carpinteria High School
This year’s
high school selection is the award-winning docu-drama “The Heart of
the Game.” Winner of the Women’s Sports Foundation’s Entertainment
Award, “The Heart of the Game” is 98-minutes of unscripted action
and passion.
“This movie is about a High
School basketball team and shows how the team grows and comes
together over a period of years. It’s filmed like a documentary so
there’s a lot of ‘action’ and real life issues. ‘The Heart of the
Game’ shows how the girls have to work through their differences and
problems to be a successful team. I loved this movie.”

Body Electric
would like to thank Coco and Betsy Crowfoot, volunteers who for
years have spearheaded the selection process, for once again
dedicating their time and effort to this project!
At the holiday
season, our thoughts turn gratefully to those who have made our
progress possible. It is your continued support that keeps our
programs thriving and our mission honored. Thank you!
While we have been
honored with a grant from the Santa Barbara Foundation for the
Adventure Club, we continue to need funding to support our mission
and other programs, including our annual scholarship awarded to a
female high school athlete, our book project, and our educational
outreach.
| Please join us in
celebrating the holiday season by making a donation on someone’s
behalf, and we will send them a card notifying them of your generous
gift in their name. It’s a perfect gift for the Secret Santa
tradition in your office! We will also introduce them to Body
Electric, our mission and programs. Please click
here for a
donation form.
Best wishes for the holidays and a happy new year!

After years of dedicated service as a Board
Member and Fund Development Chair, Samantha Sanders' term is
expiring at the end of the year. Fortunately Body Electric will not
lose Samantha's energy or dedication as she will continue to assist
Body Electric with a role on the Advisory Board. While this is not
goodbye, we would like to take this opportunity to extend our
gratitude to Samantha and to wish her the best in her other
endeavors!
